Juan GarcĂa, Cuevas del Becerro, Andalusia, Spain 2013

My parents were small farmers. Our farm was not big enough to feed all the children, so we went outside to work. For 15 years I worked as a tractor driver, goat herder and cheese maker. All the time I have worked for others, I have longed for the independence of those who produce themselves and on their own responsibility. For me, beekeeping was the way to get there.

I joined the trade union in Malaga. I was appointed provincial secretary of COAG - the Spanish union of farmers and stockbreeders. I have met many people throughout Spain, including comrades from the Via Campesina and other associations. I have learned a lot from them and they have enriched my life very much. For example, we are also fighting to ensure that the European Union's subsidies, the money that we all contribute as taxpayers, do not go primarily to the big landowners, but are distributed more fairly. In addition, it is the small businesses that create jobs, which is what we need most!
